Dhanteras,
also known as Dhantrayodashi, is the first day of the five-day Diwali festival.
It falls on the 13th day (Trayodashi) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of
the month of Kartika according to the Hindu lunar calendar.
The
name Dhanteras comes from ‘Dhan’ (wealth) and ‘Thirteenth’ (thirteenth),
symbolising prosperity, fortune, and new beginnings. This festival is a day
when people pray for wealth, health, and happiness and welcome Goddess Lakshmi
into their homes.

Dhanteras, devotees perform Lakshmi Puja in the early morning and evening
hours, which begin after sunset and last approximately 2 hours and 24 minutes.

Story of Lord Dhanvantari
According
to Hindu beliefs, Lord Dhanvantari appeared during the churning of the ocean,
filling the pot with nectar. His incarnation symbolises health, longevity, and
healing.
Therefore,
Dhanteras is also celebrated as Dhanvantari Jayanti, especially among Ayurvedic
practitioners and their followers, who seek his blessings for good health and
success.
2. The
Story of King Himachal’s Son
According
to a famous legend, King Himachal’s son’s letters predicted that he would die
from a snake bite on the fourth day of his marriage. His clever wife devised a
plan to save his life. That night, she placed her gold jewellery and silver coins
at the door and lit several oil lamps. When Yama, disguised as a snake,
arrived, Arjuna’s shining gold and the light of the lamps blinded him.
Unexpectedly,
Yama remained outside, listening to the women’s songs and music. In the
morning, he returned unharmed. This story led to the belief that lighting lamps
and purchasing shiny metal on Dhanteras protects the family from evil and
calamities.

Arrival of Goddess Lakshmi
It is
also believed that Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, visits every home on
Dhanteras. To welcome her, people clean and decorate their homes, light lamps,
draw rangoli, and illuminate her path.

People
first clean their homes, as it is believed that Goddess Lakshmi arrives only
when the house is clean and pure. Doors and windows are decorated with torans
(mango leaves) and marigold flowers.
2.
Lighting Diyas and Making Rangoli
Earthen
lamps are lit in the evening to dispel darkness and negativity. A beautiful rangoli is drawn at the entrance of the house to welcome prosperity and divine
blessings.
3.
Buying Gold, Silver, or Utensils
Buying
new metal utensils is considered very auspicious. This brings wealth and
prosperity to the home.
4.
Lakshmi Puja
In the
morning and evening, devotees perform Lakshmi Puja, as well as worship Lord
Ganesha and Kubera. They offer flowers, sweets, coins, and lamps. They pray for
wealth, good fortune, and health.
5.
Lighting the Yama Diya
After
the main puja, a small lamp is lit outside in the south direction, symbolising
Yamaraja, the god of death. It is said to protect the family.
