AIIMS Delhi: World-Class Healthcare, Education & Research Centre.

All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi (AIIMS Delhi) is India’s top public medical university and hospital located at Ansari Nagar, South Delhi. It was established in 1956 under the AIIMS Act and is self-governing under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The history of AIIMS in India began when it laid the foundation stone in 1952 and was actually established in 1956 under the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Act of 1956. It was initially planned to be set up in Calcutta, but was finally set up in New Delhi due to regional political reasons.

AIIMS Delhi was one of the first to be declared an Institute of National Importance (INI). One of the main driving forces behind AIIMS was Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, who was then the Health Minister and introduced the bill in the Lok Sabha in 1956 and worked hard to bring in a top-class medical education and research institute in India.

The growth of AIIMS institutions all over India was initiated by the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) scheme in 2003 to bridge regional disparities in super-speciality healthcare facilities. The scheme provided for setting up many AIIMS-type institutes and vesting them with autonomy with par status equal to INI recognition.
