Over the years, India’s healthcare system has undergone significant changes, but one of the most important contributing factors to this change has come from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), which has opened up many hospitals around the country since its establishment in 1956.
When someone is asked, “How many AIIMS hospitals are currently operating in India?” there is a simple answer: More than 20 AIIMS hospitals are; however, they are growing because of the government’s initiative to expand its healthcare service to rural areas and Indian citizens at a lower cost.
As of 2026, there are 25 AIIMS-approved AIIMS hospitals, with over 20 of them operational or partially functioning, while the others are in various levels of completion. This expansion of the AIIMS network represents the Indian government’s vision of providing quality healthcare services to residents of rural and hard-to-reach areas of India, which can only be achieved through high-quality healthcare facilities.
The first AIIMS, AIIMS New Delhi, set the standard for medical excellence in India and has established the highest level of recognition for an Indian healthcare facility. The Indian government has assumed that expanding the number of AIIMS facilities across states will enable them to reduce their burden to one AIIMS hospital and allow for all Indians to have fair access to health care.
Several AIIMS institutions have been created in accordance with this vision, including the AIIMS created under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). The following are currently operational AIIMS institutions: AIIMS Bhopal; AIIMS Bhubaneswar; AIIMS Jodhpur; AIIMS Patna; AIIMS Raipur; and, AIIMS Rishikesh. The establishment of these institutions has greatly enhanced the delivery of health care in the respective regions they serve by both providing advanced technology and having a large number of highly skilled doctors.
During the last few years, additional AIIMS institutions (AIIMS Gorakhpur, AIIMS Kalyani, AIIMS Bibinagar, AIIMS Deoghar) have opened, continuing to improve access to high-quality health care for millions of individuals. These facilities are especially important to the rural communities in need of specialized medical care; before the establishment of these facilities, they may have had to travel hundreds of miles to receive such care.
The AIIMS is really important for education. The AIIMS institutions make some of the doctors in the country. They do this by having tough training and research programs.
